Astacopis Training Day

The Central North Field Naturalists & friends from various Landcare and community groups from across northern Tasmania, couldn’t have asked for more at the training day held near Lapoinya on Tuesday 14 February.

Exceptional weather greeted the contingent of aspiring citizen scientists who gathered for a highly informative & entertaining lesson in habitat assessment for Astacopsis gouldi and other species of freshwater lobster.  Todd Walsh, the “Lobster Man”, delivered an authoritative demonstration of the skills required – including welcome advice on the practical and safety considerations for undertaking environmental assessments in remote locations. The training involved the “road-testing” of a comprehensive array of survey techniques that will be invaluable in providing base-line data to quantify factors impacting on the range and distribution of the increasingly endangered freshwater lobster.

A great day was had by all. Participants were encouraged to apply their new-found expertise to assessment of riparian environments in the own localities.
